What is the London Skills and Employment Observatory?
The London Skills & Employment Observatory is a project funded by the London Development Agency (LDA) and the European Social Fund (ESF) under the direction of the Greater London Authority. The purpose of the Observatory is to build, communicate and maintain a shared understanding of the London labour market and its projected future trends. The Observatory aims to provide a dedicated one-stop service to users looking to find out information on skills and employment issues in London. It also strives to identify information and research gaps and suggest how these are best addressed. The work will be delivered via a website, a Practice and Research Forum, and discrete research projects.

When and why was the Observatory set up?
There is a wide range of statistics, research and information available on the current state of the London labour market and its potential future trends. The information is often fragmented and there is no agreed overall coherent picture of London’s labour market or its future path. This can create barriers for public and private bodies when planning skills and employment provision in order to meet economic needs, and for professionals when giving advice to individuals and businesses. In order to tackle this problem, the London Skills and Employment Board (LSEB) recommended the establishment of a London Skills & Employment Observatory. Work on the Observatory started in September 2009 and it began providing data, research and information publicly in February 2010.
